Description
This is an interesting antique or vintage patchwork quilt from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The patchwork quilt consists of pieced squares (two have the maker's initials and are embroidered with a date of 1878) set into larger solid blues & other colored squares of various fabrics (mostly linen). The border feels like linen. The backing is a pretty blue & pink cotton twill in a large floral bouquet & ribbon striped pattern like you'd see on an old pillow, mattress or similar home utility items.I'm gonna take a guess as an amateur quilter/collector and say the squares were done a couple of decades before the quilt was completed. Maybe it was actually done in 3 different sessions in different eras completely... we'll never know for sure. More of a utility quilt than a precision pieced patchwork quilt, it's still awfully nice!
The pieced squares (bear paw pattern?) look like they were hand sewn but that's a guess from looking at the seams from the front, not backside so I'm not positive.
Measures 74" long X 55" wide. Each pieced square is approx. 8" square.
Pre-owned, used. There's no batting between the front & back pieces. It was tied instead of being quilted. The edging is rather casually machine sewn with crooked top stitching. The backing is faded near the center, probably along the fold crease. Actually it's in quite good condition for it's age and would make a conversation piece throw in your vintage home.
As found, it's in clean-from-extended-storage condition. It's been hanging on my clothesline in my backyard to get the dust out and now smells like fresh Oregon sunshine, lol.
