STRAIGHT FROM A CONNECTICUT COLLECTION.
A FANTASTIC AMERICAN WILLIAM AND MARY 18TH CENTURY "COURTING" MIRROR, NEW ENGLAND, Circa 1720-1740 WITH ITS ORIGINAL REVERSE PAINTED GLASS TABLET AND ITS ORIGINAL SILVERED MIRROR AND UNTOUCHED BACK BOARD IN THE MOST
FANTASTIC ORIGINAL GRUNGY SURFACE THROUGHOUT.
AN EXTREMELY RARE AND EARLY MIRROR IN GREAT CONDITION AND ORIGINAL SURFACE.
A VERY SIMPLE AMERICAN EXAMPLE.
THE EUROPEAN EXAMPLES HAVE A MOLDED FRAME WITH PAINTED GLASS PANELS AS A SURROUND.
THIS EARLY PRIMITIVE AMERICAN EXAMPLE HAS A SIMPLE HALF ROUND SURROUND WITH A BARK COVERING.
THE TOP IS MOLDED WITH A REVERSE PAINTING ON GLASS OF FLOWERS.
THE BACKBOARD IS ORIGINAL AND LOOKS TO BE UNDISTURBED AS IS THE ORIGINAL SILVERED MIRROR PLATE.
THE SURFACE IS ALL ORIGINAL. IT IS A GRUNGY OLD STAINED SURFACE WITH THE BEST PATINA.
These mirrors get their name, "courting mirrors" by old legends. As the story goes, these mirrors were usually given to the "special" young lady by her suitor. Whether that is true it makes for a good story, but the name has lived on.
THE WOOD IS COMPLETELY INTACT WITH ONLY THE SLIGHTEST OF EDGE WEAR. The only loss is to a very tight crack in the reverse painted tablet, (see photos).
