Description
FRESH FROM A VERY FINE EARLY COLLECTION HERE IN CONNECTICUT WHERE IT HAS BEEN FOR OVER 50 YEARS.
A VERY SMALL AND EARLY 17TH CENTURY PILGRIM PILGRIM PERIOD LIFT TOP BLANKET CHEST FROM THE PLYMOUTH PLANTATION AREA OF THE MASS BAY COLONY.
AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF AMERICAN 17TH CENTURY FURNITURE.
THESE SMALL LIFT TOP BLANKET CHESTS WERE USUALLY USED TO STORE VALUABLES OR BED LINENS.
VERY FEW WERE MADE AND ONLY ONCE IN A WHILE DO WE SEE THEM FOR SALE, MOST WERE THE FULL SIZE 45" AND BIGGER EXAMPLES THAT WERE USED FOR THE FAMILY CLOTHING.
THERE IS A NEARLY IDENTICAL EXAMPLE IN ONE OF THE HOUSES AT PLYMOUTH PLANTATION.
THIS WONDERFUL CHEST WAS MADE IN PLYMOUTH COUNTY, MA PROBABLY FROM THE SOUTH SITUATE OR NORWELL AREA DURING THE LAST QUARTER OF THE 17TH CENTURY.
IT IS MADE OF AMERICAN WHITE AND RED OAK.
IT HAS ITS ORIGINAL ONE BOARD MOLDED TOP WITH ITS ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT IRON STRAP HINGES STILL INTACT.
IT HAS THE BEST "V" CUT OUT SIDES OF FULL HEIGHT.
THIS DISTINCTIVE CUT OUT IS FOUND ON MANY DOCUMENTED PLYMOUTH COUNTY AREA PIECES MADE IN THE 17TH CENTURY.
IT ALSO STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL FRONT BRACKETS.
THE SURFACE IN AN OLD AND EXTREMELY GRUNGY AND UNTOUCHED ATTIC SURFACE. IT WAS NEVER PAINTED AND HAS A 350 YEAR OLD PATINA.
VERY FEW OF THESE HAVE SURVIVED THROUGH THE YEARS WITHOUT MAJOR DAMAGES AND LOSSES.
THE ENTIRE PIECE IS HAND PLANNED AND RIVEN NEW ENGLAND RED AND WHITE OAK AND MOST OF THE ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT NAILS ARE STILL INTACT, (with some later additions).
The only repair or loss is the original latch for the lock is missing and the two front brackets have been re-nailed from being kicked over the last 350 years.
Other than that
it exhibits only the typical wear and tear you would see from over 350 years of use as I have shown in the photos.
The top has a very slight warp as seen.
There are some very old and inactive bug holes, like nearly all of the Plymouth County Pieces from the 17th century.
They are completely inactive and there is no evidence at all of any present activity.
Only 35" wide, 12" deep and 17 1/2" tall
Typical wear associated with the age of the item.
Low starting Price and NO reserve.
