    Description
AN EXTREMELY FINE AND VERY RARE EARLY 17TH CENTURY "JOINED STOOL" OR JOINT STOOL WITH TURNED LEGS, MOLDED STRETCHERS AND MOLDED APRONS AND STILL RETAINING ITS ORIGINAL THUMB MOLDED TOP.
GREAT OLD GRUNGY SURFACE AND PATINA WITH TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL.
England, Circa 1650-1660 in WHITE OAK.
A WONDERFUL EARLY ENGLISH JOINT STOOL WITH A VERY AMERICAN LOOK. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE EARLY STOOLS THAT FIT NICELY INTO AN AMERICAN PILGRIM SETTING.
Very early form, the rectangular one board top is thumb molded on all four sides.
THE LEGS ARE BOLDLY TURNED AND SIMILAR TO EXAMPLES COMING FROM THE PLYMOUTH, MA AREA.
THE ORIGINAL APRONS HAVE A SIMPLE BEAD TYPE MOLDING. THIS STYLE OF MOLDING WAS ALSO COPIED BY THE PLYMOUTH COUNTY, MA CABINETMAKERS OF THE AMERICAN COLONIES.
THIS STOOL IS IN WONDERFUL CONDITION. THE TOP IS ORIGINAL.
THE APRONS AND STRETCHERS ARE ORIGINAL AND MOST OF THE ORIGINAL PEGS STILL SURVIVE AS WELL.
THE SURFACE IS OLD AND GRUNGY WITH TRACES OF THE OLD DARK SURFACE THROUGHOUT.
Although it has an American feel it is an English example.
It would fit right into an American Pilgrim setting.
This STOOL is 20" tall. The top is 17" by 10 3/4".
It exhibits only the typical wear and tear you would see from nearly 400 years of use as I have shown in the photos.
The only repairs or losses are some added nails on the top as well as the wooden pegs and a couple of very minor chips on the aprons from the added nails.
THE STOOL IS VERY STRONG, TIGHT AND CAN BE USED ON A DAILY BASIS.
For s similar example see, "Furniture Treasury", by Wallace Nutting, and "Early American Antique Country Furnishings", by George Neumann. Also, see, "The Material Culture of Plymouth County", by Brian Cuttilingy, and "When Oak was New", by John Fisk, and also "Oak Furniture the British Tradition", by Victor Chinnery.
