Description
We drove out east to shop down the perimeter of the gorgeous rolling farm hills of Western Ohio, recently, and stopped by my favorite Amish farmer’s barn in Indiana on the way. Oh boy – do I have the finds for you – I’ll be listing for weeks; many very old primitives, antiques and uniques, there’s MORE than something for everyone, so be sure to keep checking!
Please know that shipping is NOT correct as far as ebay’s estimates – items are still arriving late – and it’s not consistent – it depends upon where you live, I’ve found.
AND…I might as well say it from the get-go. ALL of my items this week are DIRTY, DUSTY, COBWEBBY AND DEBRISY, all barn or attic lived for a long time, and ALL will need a good cleaning. I do not clean or mess with as found patina in any way.
Also please note that I’ve made some changes to my payment and combined shipment policies, which you can see highlighted in my detail below. With recent increases in USPS mail charges, it might not always be less expensive to combine, especially if a box is over 12.”
IknowIknowIknow - this one is going to be expensive to ship. I don't often buy things that are larger than 12" anymore, but this one was just tooo sweet to pass up. I purchased it at a sale in tiny North Star Ohio, and it's a small trunk - I don't THINK it's a doll sized trunk (and I think it is too large for that?) but I really don't know for sure. Definitely could have been a child sized trunk. It's oldoldold, too, and it shows it, but it's hung around all of these years waiting for someone to appreciate its primitive beauty - and first it was me, will it next be you? It has a solid wood frame that has wood accents running the front and the slightly camel back curved lid, and it also has a black finished steel band that runs from one side across the front to the other side. It has gold finished tin decorative hardware at the ends of the wood bands - the gold is worn and they are dark in patina, but they still do the job - and, there are not any missing, as far as I can see. It USED to have leather strap handles - one on either short side, but those are long worn and what is left is a strip of leather hanging down on either side - no longer attached on one side (or the leather wore and broke there over the years. There's a tin or steel clasp at the front and you can see a keyhole - so it used to lock. I don't have the key, and I didn't dare push the clasp into the hole under it for fear it would be locked - so it's open and leans slightly up on the end - sorry for my fuzzy photo 4, but that's what I was trying to show you. The paper is dark - actually - the whole trunk is dark from age and just life. I THINK it might brighten up a little when cleaned - it is very dusty, especially on top, and could use a good cleaning, but it's not musty or smelly or anything like that. You can see that there's loooooooooots lf small spots of paper loss, and chips, especially on the edges, and there's spots of it where it sticks up on the edges - like on the edge of the paper in photo 2. See my photos for the chippy paper loss - the paper on the body and sides proper is actually in fairly good condition as far as chips or loss, although it does have scratches and scrapes. I've handled it reallyreally carefully so as not to cause any further loss. The paper is very dry and brittle. You can see the most amount of loss at the back by the bottom - see photo 8. The hinges are no longer attached at the back of the trunk lid - they are attached at the body, but not at the lid. One of the screws just fell out on me, too, so I put it in a baggy and it will come that way. It's not a problem with the hinges - they actually look like you might be able to get them to work again if you add hardware, but the problem is that there's nowhere for them to attach to on the lid - if you look at photos 8-10, you will see that there's a divot that is about 4" long and 1/2" to 3/4" tall on each side where the hingest used to attach. I can't tell if they are chips, or maybe someone/thing nibbled on them over the years, but it is what it is - please see my photos. The underside of the box is actually thick paperboard, not wood, but there's a strip of worn red finished wood running the length of either long side of the bottom that lifts the underside of the trunk off of the ground/table/floor. Because the hinges are detached, the lid is not attached. When I have the trunk open, I have the lid leaning on my stool to keep it open. Inside you see that there's still a strip of fabric on either side that used to keep the trunk lid from going all of the way back when open. Both of the strips are still there, but very worn, and detached on one side, so they couldn't do the job still if they wanted to. It's amazing that the tray is still inside of the trunk, that the paperboard lid is still on one side of the tray partition, and that the paperboard partition is still on the inside of the lid on the left. Both still have their printed paper with a red and blue border - the border inside of the lid is still quite vibrant while very dark on the tray. Both of the covers described above are shabby, creased, cracked, and the one covering the right side of the tray has split apart right in he middle and you can see where someone added celluloid tape to try to keep it together - even THAT is old and dried and no longer does the job. One side of the paperboard lid there is affixed to the edges of the tray, and that's how it was made, I do believe - with the paperboard creased in the center so that you could lift it without it coming off all the way. The same goes for the cover inside of the lid - see photo 16 where the crease runs horizontally across the bottom 1/4 of the paperboard - that section is attached to the edge, and I'm showing in photo 17 how it lifts down - it does not come off, and the paperboard is not split there. There's what looks to be a part of a clasp at the top of that paperboard on the edge of the inside rim of the trunk, so I assume it used to be able to close and stay that way. It will flop down when the trunk is closed, so you will see that when you open it. I'm going to stuff something in it now so that it doesn't bounce around on its way to you, and I put a teeeenie thin rubber band over the lid of the tray on the right so that the one half does not fall out in transit or when you open it. It looks like that there's a fair amount of the brown paper lining lost on the inside of the lid on the left under that creases lid. On the left, and left edge on the inside -see photo 17. The brown paper still lines the inside of the trunk but it shows wear and darkening and looooooooooooots of dust, cobwebs and debris-it could use a good wipe out. I took a close up but ran out of space to post it, so I wanted to point out the small paper duck cut out inside of the bottom of the trunk in photo 20. It's just a little flat paper duck and it's just so cute! I've put it inside of a bag, and it, along with the small hinge nail, will come inside of the trunk. Just be careful when you open the trunk at first, because remember, the lid is not attached (although you couldn't tell that by looking at it from the front) and the flap of the cover on the lid on the left side will flap open as it's not clasped. The paper on all parts of the trunk has some dark spots to black, and I just noticed that the wood band across the front has that same worn red finish as the two on the bottom. There's wear to the wood in scratches, scrapes, nicks, nibbles and dings, all over, and I see some hardware that I think may have been support over the years (not original) but is still old, and don't forget the two spots in the back that keep the hinges from attaching. The sizes are above, and it weighs just a smidge under 5 lbs. Oh....what more can I tell you?!? I think I'll let my photos take it from here. This one clearly has a story to tell, and needs someone who will fall in love with it like I did!
Customer Satisfaction is extremely important to me. If you receive an item and are not satisfied in any way, please contact me before leaving feedback.
If you are using a phone or tablet to look at listings, you may not be seeing full descriptions – please make sure you are – I list sizes, condition and many photos on all of my items – so if you are not seeing that, you’re not seeing all I have about the listing.
Please ask if you have any questions, or feel free to inform me if you have any information about one of my listings. As with any of my items, if you ever need extra photos, let me know. My white stool, my rug and anything else that you see other than the item discussed are not included in the auction!
PAYMENT IS DUE IMMEDIATELY(SAME DAY) AFTER THE CLOSE OF AN AUCTION.
I’m happy to combine shipments for you, when possible - depending upon size and weight,
it might not always be possible, though
.
I have found recently, with USPS latest rate hikes, that it now is often cheaper NOT to combine, if by doing so the box goes above 12." Please know before bidding, or check with me if you have questions.
If you win an item and plan to bid on another, please email me to let me know that you are looking at other items, hold to pay for the first item and
request a combined shipping invoice once you’ve won the other item/s
.
If you pay for an item, I have to ship it
, I cannot hold for items that close another day, if you pay for the first item. Unless you ask me for an invoice earlier, I will invoice on Sunday for multiple items purchased the week prior, or after 5 days have passed since the item that you won has closed.
5 (FIVE)
days from the closing of the FIRST bought item will be the
longest
I can wait time wise to combine, and
I ask for immediate payment after invoice for combined orders
.
I NOW HAVE EBAY'S UNPAID ITEM ASSISTANT SET TO AUTOMATICALLY FILE A CLAIM FOR PAYMENT 8 DAYS AFTER THE CLOSE OF AN AUCTION, WHEN NO PAYMENT HAS BEEN MADE - PLEASE KNOW.
Please know that some items cannot be combined, though, do to size, weight, or safety of the items. Many items that are set to ship in USPS FLAT RATE boxes; I cannot combine due to size restrictions. Please look at the shipping alternatives in the listings. I only mail USPS and pack in the best manner that we feel safe – I cannot change shipment methods after the close of an auction (i.e. rolling an old map to save money when I have it set to ship flat), especially if I feel the requested method is not safe. Again, I only ship USPS and charge actual cost to ship only. I ship within one business day of receipt of your payment, unless there’s a holiday that closes the post office, or I will notify you otherwise.
As I shop for treasures on the weekends, I most often do not ship on Saturday. Most items closing and paid for on Friday will be shipped on Monday.
Many of my items come from local rural estate sales and auctions. They are coming right from the barn or attic to you - dust, dirt, cobwebs and all! I do not clean and polish before I sell – they are in the condition found, as you see in my photos, and I leave the patina exactly as it was when I bought the item
. I do my best to photo and describe all thoroughly.
With postage rates increasing regularly, I am shipping more and more items Parcel Select. Parcel Select travels by land or rail and the packages do not leave the regional post office until they fill up a bin going in the same direction (so the estimated delivery is truly only an estimate – not exact). The post office estimates 5-7 days, but it can go up higher, sometimes even 3-4 weeks in peak mailing times like the holidays. I always provide a tracking number, so you can see where your item is on any day.
Sales tax will be added for states as required.
…and thanks so much for looking, I appreciate having you as a customer!
