Description
WE JUST GOT THIS CHAIR FROM A GREAT OLD COLLECTION. IT WAS PURCHASED ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO FROM THE NOTED ANTIQUES DEALER ROGER BACON, OF BRENTWOOD, NH.
ROGER WAS KNOW FOR SELLING EARLY AND ORIGINAL, AS FOUND ANTIQUES IN OLD AND ORIGINAL SURFACES.
A VERY RARE LATE PILGRIM OR VERY EARLY WILLIAM AND MARY PERIOD CONNECTICUT FOUR (4) SLAT LADDER BACK "MUSHROOM HAND ARMCHAIR", CIRCA 1690-1710, WITH ELONGATED BALL AND DISC FINIALS, FOUR SAWN AND RIVEN CURVED SLATS.
IT HAS SIMPLE TURNED ARMS AND THE ORIGINAL LINE TURNED HAND HOLDS ON THE FRONT FRONT POSTS.
IT HAS VERY EARLY PLAIN TURNED STRETCHERS ALL AROUND.
IT IS IN A FANTASTIC EARLY, CIRCA 1760-1800 BLACK PAINT WITH WHITE VINE DECORATIONS OVER THE ORIGINAL RED.
THIS CHAIR HAS A GREAT HISTORIC OLD PAINTED SURFACE WITH THE GREATEST PATINA.
THIS GREAT CHAIR IS ATTRIBUTED TO CONNECTICUT AREA OF NEW ENGLAND.
THE CHAIR HAS THE TYPICAL VASE AND BALL TURNINGS ON THE FRONT POSTS THAT WE SEE IN OTHER DOCUMENTED 17TH AND EARLY 18TH CENTURY CHAIRS FROM THE SAME AREA AND PERIOD.
This is a great early survivor in fantastic historic painted surface and patina.
IT IS IN WONDERFUL CONDITION.
THE ONLY LOSS IS THE USUAL WEAR AND TEAR TO THE FEET, BUT THE PIECE HAS NEVER BEEN ENDED OR RESTORED.
THE NATURAL RUSH SEAT HOWEVER IS A 19TH CENTURY REPLACEMENT BUT IT HAS GREAT OLD SURFACE AND IS IN VERY FINE CONDITION.
THIS IS A VERY RARE CHAIR TO FIND IN THIS CONDITION AND PAINTED SURFACE.
For a similar example, see "Furniture Treasury", by Wallace Nutting, and "American Seating, 1630-1730", by Benno Forman for further discussion on similar Pilgrim Period chairs).
43" tall with a seat height of 16 1/2".
Typical wear associated with the age of the item.
Like most of these early 17th century chairs, there is the usual loss to the feet from nearly 400 years of use.
Low starting Price and NO reserve.
