AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN "APPLE OR CENTERPIECE" TRAY WITH ORIGINAL "HEART" CUT-OUT END HANDLES IN WONDERFUL DRY ATTIC SURFACE WITH ITS ORIGINAL APPLIED SHOE OR TRESTLE FEET.
PINE, PENNSYLVANIA, CIRCA 1820-1840.
A FANTASTIC PIECE OF EARLY PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN WOODEN-WARE.
CANTED ON ALL FOUR SIDES. THE PIECE HAS HAND CUT DOVETAILS ON THE ENDS WITH ALL SQUARE NAIL CONSTRUCTION.
THE TOP ON ALL FOUR SIDES HAS ELABORATE SCROLLED DECORATION AND THE PIECE RESTS ON ITS ORIGINAL TRESTLE CARVED SHOE FEET.
THE ADDED SHOE FEET AND HEART CUT HANDLES ON THE ENDS MAKE THIS ONE OF THE NICEST OF THIS FORM I HAVE SEEN IN MANY YEARS.
The patina and surface is a wonderful old dry attic surface.
There are traces of an earlier red paint throughout, but the piece has been without paint for so long that the attic surface looks original.
These boxes were used to hold fruit or vegetables and were placed onto the table as a centerpiece.
21 1/2" across the top and 18" at the base, 11" deep at the top and 8 1/4" at the base and a full 8 1/2" tall.
Typical wear and imperfections with age. Minor losses to SURFACE as seen in photos.
