STRAIGHT FROM AN OLD CONNECTICUT COLLECTION.
It was purchased ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO from the noted Antique Dealer Lillian Cogan, who was called the Queen of Hearts.
Lillian specialized in early William and Mary furniture and accessories and was known for her collection of Heart and Crown Chairs and furniture.
She was a contemporary of John Walton, the Sack's and the Liverant's here in CT.
AN EXTREMELY RARE WILLIAM AND MARY CONNECTICUT "DOUBLE HEART AND CROWN" DECORATED BANNISTER BACK SIDE CHAIR, Circa 1730-1740, FROM THE SOUTHEAST CONNECTICUT SHORELINE.
A period 18th Century William and Mary HEART AND CROWN Decorated Bannister Back chair with a fully developed and scrolled carved DOUBLE CROWN crest with A DOUBLE HEART CUT OUT, a turned flattened ball finial, THREE BOLD split and conforming banisters, a bottom crest, with double turned front stretchers, all in an old STAINED surface.
THIS RARE CHAIR IS FROM THE SOUTHEAST CONNECTICUT SHORE AREA WHERE THE NOTED HEART AND CROWN CHAIRS WERE PRODUCED.
We cannot attribute this chair to a particular maker but it follows the style of the other examples from the same region.
As noted and researched in Robert Trent's Book, "Hearts and Crowns", other similar examples also can be found with the later Queen Anne back splat rather than the bannisters.
The chair has had a few restorations and repairs through its lifetime. Lillian had the bottoms of the rear posts re-built probably because they were damaged or cut. The front posts and feet are fine so I am guessing the rear posts either had water damage or were worn down from 300 years of rocking. These additions are above the rear stretchers but all the stretchers are original.
The rush seat was replaced at the same time.
The restorations were done by an accomplished cabinetmaker.
The surface is an old refinish with traces of an old green and the original red paint showing through.
This great chair stands 43 1/2" tall. The seat height is 18" and is 20" across.
