Description
Antique Domed Lid Document CasketA small wooden travel document or keepsake box likely
from
1850-1899. Upper portion is covered in very well worn black painted canvas, while the interior features a light colored paper lining. There appears to be
some
red paint under the paper as well as showing at the front edges (lid and base), so the black covering could possibly be a later addition. This casket has nail head or tack trim, a top handle and locking mechanism with applied escutcheon.
The lid is attached with wire "hinges"
Measurements:
Approx. 11 3/4" x 7 3/8" and 6 1/4"
Condition:
Overall, this
primitive
box is in good condition. The wood structure is still well-fitted and solid. The covering is in generally good condition and of good (black) color though there is loss and wear especially at the edges, as you'd expect from use and age. The metal fittings are well patinated and have not been
cleaned.
Unfortunately I do
not
have the key.
Internally, the box paper is very nice, with some edge loss and cracking as you'd expect of a fragile material. There are two fabric strip lid supports which are there but have ripped from the lid tacked ends.
Please look at all photos as they can show condition more completely that I can describe it.
