    Description

Up for your consideration is a very old antique, primitive early to mid-19th century (1800-1865) bread dough box made from pine wood and assembled with forged square headed nails with an uneven tapered shaft to them made by a blacksmith, by hand, and they are archetypical of the early to mid-19th century nails used by woodworkers to nail wooden objects together with them. The box is a larger one assembled to hold a larger loaf of unbaked bread dough until it rises and is ready to be removed from the box, placed on a pallet, and slid into the brick oven. A brick or masonry ovens of the time period consisted of a baking chamber made of fireproof bricks usually found in kitchens of the period sometimes they were arched and sometimes they were rectangle shaped.
The box is long, narrow, and deep looking with raised sides to it almost like a trough to accommodate a loaf of raw bread dough until it rises and is ready to bake in an oven as I mentioned above. Bread dough boxes were an essential kitchen tool to the homemaker of the time period as bread was made almost every day as there were no preservatives during this time period to keep bread fresh for more than a day or so.
The dough box measures 11 3/4" long X 7" wide X 4" deep. Underneath it it measures 10 1/4" long X 5 1/4" wide as the box is trough shaped. It is in very good primitive, antique condition with some nails exposed as it was hand made and small splinter in the wood from a nail driven into it. Other wise it is perfect for display right away!
Today, collecting primitive antiques has become a past time for many people however, primitive antiques are scarce and the would be collector faces many challenges like purchasing them from a high-end antique stores or malls, on the internet like on EBAY or Etsy or, one of many online sources. Primitive antiques are featured at in-person or online auctions too. Primitive antiques are collected for their natural charm and beauty as they are hand-made and hand-finished and blend well with rustic primitive decorum's, country kitchen and urban farmhouse motifs, they look great in warehouse, contemporary, minimalist decorum's too where only one antique item is present in a room used primarily as a focal point drawing the eye to it when entering a room full of contemporary home furnishings to accentuate its value as an antique, and its timeless, ageless appeal today as well as yesteryear.
