    A VERY RARE AND BOLD AMERICAN 17TH CENTURY MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY CARVER SIDE CHAIR IN OLD GRUNGY BLACK PAINTED SURFACE AND WONDERFUL CONDITION FROM AN OLD CONNECTICUT COLLECTION.
    AN EXTREMELY FINE AND RARE EARLY 17TH CENTURY AMERICAN PILGRIM PERIOD TURNED SPINDLE "CARVER" SIDE CHAIR IN NATIVE AMERICAN MAPLE WITH THREE TURNED SPINDLES, A TURNED TOP CREST RAIL AND THE CLASSIC "ESSEX COUNTY" SHAPED SPINDLES, ALL IN A WONDERFUL GRUNGY OLD 19TH CENTURY BLACK PAINTED SURFACE AND PATINA WITH AN OLD 19TH C RUSH SEAT.
    PROBABLY ESSEX COUNTY, MA OR BOSTON, Circa 1670-1680.
    ONE OF THE BOLDEST OF THE FORM.
    THIS IS A FIRST PERIOD CARVER SIDE-CHAIR OF GREAT IMPORTANCE.
    A bold early design, it has THREE BOLD turned spindles in the back with a CLASSIC turned crest rail top.
    The nipple and disc shaped finials are completely original.
    THE STRETCHERS ARE ALL ORIGINAL.
    Like many of these early pilgrim chairs, the lower portion of the posts below the stretchers were added to for height. Over the course of 300 years of wear, the feet are usually worn away and additions to bring the chair back to full height are added.
    THE SURFACE IS AN OLD GRUNGY BLACK PAINT WITH NICE PATINA WITH TRACES OF AN OLDER BLACK PAINT BELOW.

    CARVER SIDE CHAIRS ARE EXTREMELY RARE AND USUALLY WHEN THEY COME ON THE MARKET THEY HAVE MANY REPAIRS AND RESTORATIONS.
    THE ONLY LOSS TO THIS CHAIR, LIKE STATED ABOVE, IS THE 2" ADDITIONS ON THE BOTTOMS OF THE POSTS and THE REPLACED RUSH SEAT.
    This great chair stands 38" TALL. The seat height is a full 17".
