A VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENFIELD, CT SHAKER COMMUNITY CABRIOLE LEG CANDLESTAND IN CHERRY IN A GRUNGY OLD STAINED AND VARNISHED SURFACE.
ENFIELD, CT COMMUNITY, CIRCA 1800-1830.
A FANTASTIC PIECE DIRECTLY FORM THE NORTH FAMILY OF ENFIELD, CT SHAKERS.
ALTHOUGH THE ENFIELD, CT SHAKER COMMUNITY WAS CLOSED IN 1917, THE NORTH FAMILY DISBANDED IN 1913.
A FEW OF THE REMAINING SHAKERS FROM THE NORTH FAMILY DID NOT MOVE UP TO THE SHAKER COMMUNITY IN MAINE BUT RATHER ASSIMILATED BACK INTO THEIR NON-SHAKER FAMILIES IN ENFIELD.
THIS GREAT CANDLESTAND WAS ONE OF THOSE PIECES THEY BROUGHT OUT WITH THEM WHEN THEY LEFT.
I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE NEALY ALL OF THE ITEMS THAT THEY BROUGHT OUT.
MANY OF THESE PIECES WERE DISPLAYED OVER THE YEARS AT ANTIQUE FAIRS AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBITS.
WHAT A FANTASTIC PIECE OF ENFIELD, CT SHAKER FURNITURE.
IT HAS A ONE BOARD ROUND TOP WITH A WELL DEFINED COVE BEVELED EDGE.
THE TOP IS HELD ON WITH ITS ORIGINAL CLEAT AND ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT SCREWS.
THE TURNED SHAFT IS SIMILAR TO WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED EXAMPLES OF OTHER SHAKER CANDLESTAND BOTH FROM THIS COMMUNITY AND OTHER COMMUNITIES AS WELL.
NEARLY ALL OF THE DOCUMENTED EARLY FORMS LIKE THIS EXAMPLE ARE ON THE SHORT SIDE BEING 25" TALL OR LESS. THIS EXAMPLE IS 25".
ANOTHER FEATURE FOUND ON NEARLY ALL THE OTHER EXAMPLES IS THE EXTENDED SPREAD OF THE LEGS, JUST LIKE THIS ONE. THE LEGS ARE SLIGHTLY LONGER IN SPREAD THAT WE USUALLY SEE IN NON SHAKER EXAMPLES.
THE LOW HEIGHT AND LARGER SPREAD IS THOUGHT BY MANY TO FACILITATE THE USE OF THE STAND AS A WORK PIECE AS WELL.
ANOTHER TYPICAL SHAKER FEATURE FOUND ON THIS STAND IS THE ROUND WROUGHT IRON BRACE THAT COVERS THE ENTIRE BOTTOM OF THE SHAFT AS WELL AS THE USE OF HAND WROUGHT SCREWS INSTEAD OF NAILS TO HOLD THEM ON.
THIS STAND IS IN UNTOUCHED CONDITION.
THERE IS AN OLD 19TH CENTURY REPAIR TO WHERE ONE LEG WAS KICKED OUT, (SEE PHOTOS). THE ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT NAILS USED TO FIX IT ARE STILL INTACT.
ALSO, AT AN EARLY PERIOD THE SHAKERS ADDED SOME 1/4" SPACERS ON THE BOTTOMS OF THE FEET, I THINK IT WAS TO LEVEL IT TO THE FLOOR BECAUSE THERE IS NO OTHER REASON FOR THEM. THEY DATE TO THE MID 19TH CENTURY.
THE SURFACE IS INCREDIBLE.
COMPLETELY UNTOUCHED AND ORIGINAL IT IS A BROWN STAIN WITH ITS ORIGINAL COLORED VARNISH OVER COAT.
IT IS GRUNGY AND HAS THE BEST PATINA.
Minor surface losses as seen.
THE CONDITION IS AS FOLLOWS;
As stated there was an old 19th century repair to one leg. There is an old age or shrinkage line in the top as well as the added spacers underneath the feet. That and the usual surface imperfections and losses as seen.
ALL OF THE COMPONENTS ARE ORIGINAL.
The top is about 16" across and the stand is 25" tall.
