    Description

We are pleased to offer a very EARLY Browning Iron or Salamander.  The long handle and faceted knob end put this Salamander most likely in the 17TH Century.  The earliest Peels had a similarly design handle.  The browning head is a petite 2 1/4" by 2 1/4."  The head shows a lot of use and edge wear.  The handle is 23" long with an attached forged weld browning head.  The salamander shows the best tool marks and iron striations throughout with an amazing patina.  The handle has a small drilled hole 2/3's up the handle shaft, it appears to be original, and it may have been an early heat relief hole to keep the handle cooler to handle.  The Salamanders were used in the Hearth to brown the top of the cooking meats.
The Salamander in as found condition, and the finish is the old wonderful patina.
    It is
in UNTOUCHED as found condition with NO Repair or Restoration.  Just a wonderful very early and lovingly used example.

Over the next few weeks/months we will be listing numerous rare and unusual Early American hearth utensils as we downsize our collection of the last 50 years.  If you enjoy collecting early iron, please add us to your saved sellers' list.  I promise you won't be disappointed.  I am not a pro at taking photos.  So please if you don't see a specific feature, please ask us for additional photos, since the photos are part of the description.  Thank you for looking.
Please note: These wonderful and unique items have been
in our collection for quite some time.  We know that we often use the word "RARE," UNIQUE, and ONE OF A KIND in most of our description, because we have always searched out unique and unusual primitive wrought iron items.
    Thank you for looking.
Shipping is USPS Parcel Ground due to the high cost of shipping.  We, also, made USPS priority shipping available, if you would prefer priority.
We understand the East Coast shipping is pretty expensive, and we try to offer our Primitive Wrought Iron / Cast Iron heavy and large items for a reasonable price to offset the high shipping cost.
If you prefer other shipping options/carriers, please advise prior to payment.  We are very flexible.  We may need to substitute UPS/FedEx Ground for USPS Parcel Ground at the time of shipment, because it may be a faster delivery or other reasons.  Sometimes when possible, we will substitute USPS Priority to assure prompt arrival.  Please let us know, if you have an issue with the UPS/FedEx Ground substitution.   Thank you.
